Welcome to the February 2024 Newsletter

On The Farm

As I write this article, temperatures are below zero. I can hardly wait for the heat wave to hit Sunday with a high of 34 degrees! While winter is usually a time to hunker down and do some inner work, be cozy, and hibernate a little, we’ve all been kept on our toes by the current political frenzy surrounding a new presidency. The chaos and vigilance that come with rhetoric that is violent and unpredictable have put everyone on edge. So many clients are coming to me with overwhelm and anxiety. How can we remain calm and carry on?

My shamanic mentor, Sandra Ingerman, is an expert counselor for trauma. She advises that when we feel powerless because of what’s happening around us, we look inward to the soul to rediscover what we’re made of. Spending time connected with our soul keeps us grounded, centered, and present — in meditation, prayer, shamanic journeying, walking in nature, or even just a meal blessing. When we give ourselves dedicated quiet time during our day, we can expand into our passion, our will and our power. We give our minds a break from worry about things that haven’t happened yet, injustices that we fear will occur, and the drama that the daily news offers us.

Further, when we spend time with our soul, we see just how much power we DO have. Soul power. If you are fortunate enough to have a community to spend soul time with, you know that there is even more power available to you and the others.

Creating spaciousness in our lives is important. Worry, anxiety and fear all tend to contract us into small, tight balls. Even the mind begins to think small thoughts. The heart is our most spacious organ. Its energy field rivals that of a car battery. The love we carry, the gratitude we hold in our hearts can expand beyond the physical container and really contribute energy that will keep us sane in the world at large just now. Think of everything you are grateful for, everything you love in this world, and move that energy into your heart.

Our words are some of the strongest weapons we can wield. The vitriol is as contagious as a virus. We can immunize ourselves against the verbal toxicity by not contributing to it. Think carefully before you comment, respond or otherwise react to the chaos around you. The BOOKSHELF selection this month will support you to do this.

Bless you in your process of coping. May you live with grace and ease, knowing you are not alone, knowing your soul power is strong enough to move mountains should you choose to do so. My upcoming course, MEDICINE FOR THE EARTH, includes many ways to heal toxic thoughts, words, and overwhelm. Check it out in Upcoming Classes below.

How to Heal Toxic Thoughts: Simple Tools for Personal Transformation by Sandra Ingerman

In olden times, psychic warfare was waged with words as the most powerful tool humankind had. Anger that took the form of curses brought down whole villages.
Not much has changed. In our present time, negative feelings caused by rage, rant, resentment, and stress wear us down, causing depression, illness and burnout. How is it possible to feel safe and secure in this kind of environment?
Sandra Ingerman, a psychologist and shamanic teacher (one of my primary mentors), uses the ancient principles of alchemy, which metaphorically transformed heavy leaded consciousness into gold light consciousness. She offers strategies for processing the harmful thoughts and emotions that we encounter daily. Instead of sending and receiving harmful energy, you will learn how to radiate positive thoughts and shield yourself from those that are destructive. Simple methods, but very effective to change yourself and the world around you.
If you would like to dive deeply, I will be teaching Sandra’s methods in the MEDICINE FOR THE EARTH class beginning online in April. See details below. You do not need to know how to do shamanic journeying to take the class. It is open to everyone, all faiths and practices.

Just For You

When I can’t get outside regularly and have been holed up for long stretches of bitter cold temperatures, more-intense-than-average weather, and stressful work schedule, my mind, body and spirit crave spaciousness—sacred space where I can just ‘be’. I turn to my senses for grounding and inspiration. For a quick do-over or to enhance an existing space, see if any of them inspire your own creation of a sacred place for yourself.
PHYSICAL SPACE. I choose one small corner of the house where I could spend “cozy” time, and clean it thoroughly, limiting the time spent—usually half an hour to an hour max. I clear and clean as much as I can in that time and then stop. Next, I set up a chair with cushions (or just cushions, but that puts me at dog licking level), a lamp, and maybe a small rug and stand/table. What small space could you set up in your home? Maybe just a tabletop or a window space?
SIGHT. Color can really change your mood. The rug, cushions, and little table cover are in colors that relax me, make me feel at home. Artwork and photos help stimulate my mind. I also bring nature inside with found natural objects and plants that flower. I have a little yellow orchid that just keeps blooming, and the geranium i brought in for the winter shoots out beautiful red clusters. What colors affect your psyche?
SMELL. I smudge my area with sage, but also use a lavender spray or burn a piece of palo santo, not only to clean the energy, but because they smell good to me. These smells take me to deep relaxation and comfort. I find that burning incense can be too much for my sensitive nose. However, just putting the incense in an open jar is just the right amount of smell. I also think that nothing rivals the scent of baking chocolate chip cookies.
TASTE. Speaking of cookies. I do like fine chocolate, taking time to let it melt on my tongue. I meditate with tea, making it so hot that I can’t gulp it down. I’m forced to drink slowly, savoring each sip. Is there a taste you can enjoy slowly? Treat yourself.
HEAR. I work with the winds shamanically, so I have chimes everywhere. I also love to listen to classical music, Nora Jones, and the Dixie Chicks, depending on my mood. Classic guitar is my go-to sound. Sometimes, silence is golden and I sit in the dark in beautiful silence just to unplug from my world for awhile. I do love singing, mostly in the car. It helps my voice express itself. I also read poetry aloud, and love NPR’s Poetry Unbound with Padrick O’Tuama. Is there music you haven’t heard in awhile? Have you experienced full silence lately?
TOUCH. Touch brings us closer to our animals, our people, our world. It’s a way of communicating, and a way of relating to our environment. I am a very tactile person. I love textures of fiber, wood, fur, leaves, you name it. Sitting in my space, spinning fiber, is one of the most meditative things I do. I’m that person who has to touch everything in the store. While I love making snow balls, walking through crunching leaves or on a wet beach that gives way to my step, touch is a bit more challenging to experience indoors. What has hard, soft, smooth or rough surfaces in your space? Notice the textures of your life. Do you have a favorite that you could incorporate into your space?
FEEL. Mostly, I want my personal space to feel good. I want it to feel like a small sanctuary, a place with the specific purpose of taking time out to nurture and replenish my energy even for just a moment. Could you use some nurturing and replenishment? Think about giving this to yourself—a mini getaway.

Welcome to the March 2024 Newsletter

On The Farm

These days, weather patterns and politics seem to mirroring each other—one day near zero, the next day sunshine and sixty degrees! With these extreme ups and downs, it’s easy to be dramatic about the lack of predictability, about the chaos that ensues, about uncertainty every day. We just don’t know when it will end. Are we still talking about weather? You bet!

The energy we generate around anything we experience creates a field around us that affects everything—our family, our animal companions, our work, our creativity and problem solving, our communication, and our environment. Shamanically speaking, we, as a world population reacting to various crises, are creating the energy that produces these extremes of cold, heat, wet, fires, earthquakes, storms, blizzards.

Sounds unbelievable? Notice when you are upset, nervous or confused, how do your animals behave? or your kids? How does your life change—do you experience episodes of “bad luck”, accidents, unfortunate events? As an animal communicator, I frequently see behavioral changes in animal companions in response to human drama and emotional states. It’s not easy to tell a person who simply wants their companion to stop peeing outside the box, that the animal is telling me their person’s energy is too intense and they have no control over their person.

Lynn McTaggert, in her book, The Field, explains that we are made of energy—we generate it, we emanate it, and we contribute to world-wide matrices of energy with our emotional state of vibration, and that can actually be measured. The good news is that we have a choice. We can contribute to the matrix of hatred that surrounds the planet and add to its strength, OR, we can choose to contribute to the matrix of compassion that also surrounds the planet. The entire country of Bhutan prays for the planet’s higher vibration. In my travels, I have been shown by animals the world over a kind of energy grid that they work on to help raise Earth’s vibration.

In the throes of reactivity, it is sometimes difficult to be aware of our own energy, much less be aware that we’re part of a chain reaction that is contributing to others’ emotional states, for good or for not so good. However, we CAN acknowledge our feelings and choose not to add our reactive energy to those matrices which are not to the highest good of the planet. What did you contribute today, which matrix did you strengthen?

A New Year of Shamanic Training Is Beginning!

The new year of shamanic training will begin in April with MEDICINE FOR THE EARTH/HEALING WITH SPIRITUAL LIGHT. This foundational class will be taught on ZOOM every Wednesday, 7pm-9pm eastern time from April 2-May 14.

This class does not require that you know how to journey — I welcome people of all backgrounds and faith traditions. The class was designed by Sandra Ingerman as a resource for everyone to help people cope with uncertainty and toxic energy, and more importantly, reconnect people with nature and its wonders from a spiritual perspective.

I will be teaching you simple healing techniques for yourself and others. There is also an introduction to the elements and their role in our wellbeing. Reconnection with nature would not be complete without an introduction to the Hidden Folk—nature spirits all around us that most of us loved as children and disconnected when we entered school.

If you feel a spiritual energy when you walk in nature, this course is for you. I hope you will join me for a deepening of your relationship with Nature and with the Earth and for fun. For registration, see the UPCOMING CLASSES section below.

A Pilgrim’s Guide to Walking Wisdom, by Renee Baribeau

For the past four years, Renee Baribeau has been my teacher and mentor in wind shamanism. Her book, Winds of Spirit, has become my foundation reference book to the wind spirits who have become important guides in my life. Wind work is about trust, forces of nature, and significant lessons that one can learn through wisdom that the wind allies have been giving humankind for eons.

Renee’s approach to life is unconventional, like the wind. She has learned to embrace the unknown. Her intuitive sense of the world around her is expressed in this book—she’s a really good writer. Her pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago in 2024 brought insights that will support your own spiritual journey, wherever you are on that path. Her observations are practical—she is known as the Practical Shaman. Her experience on the Camino touches things we all have thought about and takes us deeper into our process of self-discovery, stimulating perspectives that broaden our path.

This book is right on time for new spring beginnings. I hope you like it.

Just For You

The spring equinox is March 20. I will begin spring cleaning of the farm, the house, and myself. Since this is the Chinese Year of the Snake, I thought it might be fun to give you a guided visualization, basically a guided journey, to the spirit of Snake to help you slough off those old energies from the past year or longer that may be slowing you down. My apologies to those of you who have a fear of snakes. I encourage you to experience a very gentle and profound journey to this spirit animal. Everyone who has done this so far has emerged with new joy in their life. I hope you will, too.

Welcome to the January 2024 Newsletter

On The Farm

Each year begins with celebration and acknowledgement of new intentions, and the cold and darkness of January create an ideal time to work with those intentions. This year, our intentions have extra support in the form of Snake, the Chinese zodiac spirit known for its wisdom - an ability to see the bigger picture and have a deeper understanding of the world that allows thoughtful decisions. Snake is also known for its intuition - a remarkable ability to sense what others are feeling or thinking, making them excellent judges of character. Snakes are also strategic and resourceful - skilled at finding creative solutions and patient in achieving their goals with careful planning. Methodical planning means no energy wasted in a slower, more careful process.
Snakes are also revered for ability to shed their skin and renew themselves, symbolizing transformation and rebirth. For centuries, snakes have been a symbol for health and healing.
When my little snake, Balthazar, sheds his skin, it’s a fascinating process. He begins by retreating into seclusion under his water dish. I won’t see him for 3-6 days, depending on the season. During this time, he doesn’t eat, drink or move. The outer skin becomes like damp paper and has an imprint of scales, eyes, nose and mouth. When he is ready, he emerges from under the dish, and turns the skin inside out, using the rough edges of his landscape to assist him. Like taking off a knee sock from the top. The sloughed skin is beautiful, but useless to him, so I remove it from his landscape. Once he has done his work, it only takes a few minutes to remove his skin.
When we have spent time truly integrating our intentions and planning for their implementation, letting go of old habits can be quick, rewarding and beautiful. Manifestation of new habits takes more than words. One must slow down and feel them first, and give the body, mind and spirit a taste of what is desired. At the same time, one must spend time with the old, discerning what needs to go, and thanking the old habits for bringing us this far. If there is gratitude, there will be grace and ease. Wishing you a slower, graceful and easeful new year.

Paying it Forward

Each year, many of you donate funds that will help others to be trained in service to animals, to receive needed communication or shamanic services, or to have chaplain support in their time of need. It is through your generosity that I am able to provide services to those who cannot pay.
If you have had a good experience with a communication or service, or I have provided chaplain support to you that was helpful, would you consider donating funds to pay it forward? It’s easy to do. Just go to the website, scroll to the bottom of the home page, and click on GIVE TO OUR SCHOLARSHIP FUND. You can also send checks to Judy Ramsey, 818 S. Freer Rd., Chelsea, MI 48118. Any amount is appreciated to offset the costs for a person or animal in need.

THE SACRED BALANCE; Rediscovering Our Place in Nature, by David Suzuki

David Suzuki is a Canadian scientist, environmental activist and expert. For 25 years, Suzuki’s book, The Sacred Balance, has been informing people of the ecological harmony and balance that is possible through right relationship with nature. The anniversary edition has been extensively updated, with a foreword from Robin Wall Kimmerer. Suzuki invites readers to see themselves as part of nature, not separate from it. He reflects on the teachings of indigenous leaders around the world, combining science, philosophy, spirituality and indigenous knowledge to offer concrete suggestions for an ecologically sustainable future by rediscovering and addressing humanity’s basic needs.
This is a good book to read after you’ve read The Serviceberry, from last month’s bookshelf feature. The two go well together.

Just For You

In 2025, the Year of the Snake, a really important focus is self-care at all levels. I’m adding this newsletter section to inspire you to try new things, but mostly to help you do your self care. I’ll have something every month for you to try. Let me know how it goes.
One of the things that completely nourishes me is tea. Tea has been an important ally my entire life—my grandmother and mother used teas for healing, comfort, energizing and fun. One of my fondest memories is of having a cup of jasmine tea brewed in the cup, so I could watch the flowers unfold into a cup garden, smell the fragrance, taste the gentleness of the leaves, and feel the warmth and comfort of the liquid as I drank it.
In my older age, nothing has changed in my close relationship with tea, except it has become deeper and broader to include a world of flavors. I treat myself several times a month to our local Tea Haus in Ann Arbor, MI, inviting friends to join me for conversation and tea. Sometimes we even take advantage of the beautiful scones and pastries.
Every morning, I start my day with the tea that sets the tone of my day. Do I need more energy? Do I need to slow down? Do I need to go inward or will I be with a lot of clients and people today? Where do I need support to be my best self? My inventory of needs will determine which tea I choose. Sometimes, I just enjoy the moment of stillness and that is my only intention—enjoy the tea and the quiet moment.
I also do tea meditation to ground myself. My meditation is a mindful ceremony, done slowly with an intention. I make sure it’s slow by brewing the tea as hot as I can tolerate, so I can’t gulp it. It may take up to 1/2 hour to do this, doing several steepings with the same leaves. Each steeping tastes a bit different-sweeter. For the ceremony, I use a special cup with a lid, for brewing in the cup Chinese style, but because intention is the most important element in the ceremony, any favorite tea cup or mug will support your process.
Imagine my delight and surprise when I discovered Living Tea. Here’s the introduction that founder Colin Hudon sent for you:
Starting in 2012, founder Colin Hudon developed Living Tea through his lifelong immersion in Tea and Tao. As an herbalist, acupuncturist, and practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, he shares tea as a moving meditation and living art. Inspired by the positive transformation in this community through the plan medicine of tea, Living Tea is honored to share this path with you.
The website, https://livingtea.net, is a great place to begin your exploration. Living Tea provides education about tea, its preparation, its history and its role within a regimen of self-care. Hudon has oriented the organization to a Daoist perspective, which, like shamanism, is very close to nature and a natural flow, a natural way of doing things. I like that the business promotes community with retreats, events and seasonal tea clubs. While the site offers high quality teas in good variety, my favorite tea is Puerh with its earthy flavor that tastes like a forest path smells after rain. I subscribed right away to the monthly Puerh club to experience the range of flavors from this beautiful, healthful tea. I’m hoping at some point to join others in a trip to China with a tea focus.
I hope you’ll check out Living Tea. It will be an adventure in a cup! They have offered a special coupon for you. Go to their website, and get 15% off your first order by entering the code TEAPRACTICE15.

MAKE 2025 THE YEAR OF YOUR ADVENTURE!

From October 24-November 10, 2025, I will be doing an expedition to Peru. While I have been doing this since 2020, this year is special because we will be going to Lake Titicaca, a beautiful, sacred place that we only visit every 5-6 years. The group will consist of 8-12 persons—small enough to be flexible with our exploration, so we’ll fit easily into places that larger groups can’t go.

The trip is mostly native immersion. We will be welcomed in the Sacred Valley in homes and communities by Quechua people and stay in homes and guest centers on the islands of Taquile and Amantaní at Lake Titicaca. We’ll see Peru through the eyes of my family - I have been a member of two families through my goddaughters and a sister to our hosts, Fielding and Roman Vizcarra—and those who travel with me are welcomed like family. We’ll have work days at a farm in the Sacred Valley and at the high Andean community of Amaru. We’ll also be guests at the Dias de los Muertos celebration in Pisaq. That is an amazing experience!

This is a very spiritual trip. The Quechua and Amaru people live from their hearts and extend that to us as we visit. There is no separation of spirit and normal life and nature. We’ll be doing ceremony and celebrations with them throughout the trip. My friend, Roman, will be our guide and interpreter in the Sacred Valley, where you will see Machu Picchu and other heritage sites, including Cusco. At Lake Titicaca, we will be guided by local native leaders, and visit a vicuña preserve, as well as sacred sites near the lake.

25 years ago, I went to Peru for the first time and thought it would be the trip of a lifetime. It has turned out to be a lifetime trip. I love Peru and its people—their generosity, their caring, their hearts. Not to mention some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! Over the years, I have discovered some sure fire remedies for altitude sickness, dissentery and other ailments one experiences in Peru. I’ll keep you healthy and safe, and happy you came.
Fielding and I are developing the itinerary now, so more details and costs will be coming in February’s newsletter. Stay tuned.
